Kitchen BackSplash Ideas – KITCHEN BACKSPLASH TILING?

HI ,
THIS IS MY FIRST TILE PROJECT. I AM INSTALLING A BACKSPLASH ON SHEETROCK USING 4.5"X4.5" PORCELAIN TILES. USING OMNIGRIP MASTIC APPLIED WITH A 1/4" X 3/16" V-NOTCH TROWEL. THE TILES HAVE A WAFFLE BACK. MY CONCERN IS DO I HAVE TO FILL IN THE WAFFLE DEPRESSIONS,WHICH SEEM TO BE 1/16" DEEP,BY BACK BUTTERING PRIOR TO APPLYING TILE TO COMBED MASTIC. ALSO, IS THE TROWEL SIZE CORRECT?

P.S. WHY DO SOME TILES HAVE A WAFFLED BACK AND SOME A PRACTICALLY FLAT BACK?

THANKS!

Removing kitchen backsplash…?

I want to get rid of old ceramic tile backsplash in my kitchen and instead of putting up new tile just paint the wall behind it. Once I remove the tile how should I get rid of the adhesive? I was thinking about sanding if but sheetrock is so thin I didn’t want to sand through it and have to replace it. Has anyone else done this before? What worked?

Simple Kitchen Backsplash Ideas: Travertine Tile Installation?

lan to install 18X18 travertine as kitchen backsplash over existing sheetrock. Have some experience with ceramic tile in flooring and backsplash.

Should I use thinset or mastic to bond the tiles to the sheetrock?
For the bonding material recommended, what size trowel notch?
How close can I install the tiles to each other, i.e., how thin can I make the grout lines?
I suspect travertine is more fragile than ceramic. How much trouble will I have cutting openings for switches, etc? What is the best way to cut these openings?

How do I tile over damaged sheetrock?

I’m beginning a kitchen remodeling project and have already taken the tile backsplash (about 10" high) off the sheetrock. The sheetrock was previously textured (common in new houses) and then the tile was glued onto it.

When taking the tile off, the paper portion of the sheet rock has ripped off with some of the tile exposing the plaster center portion of the sheet rock. In some other places the plaster is cracked. It isn’t too bad. Some areas of damage are about half the size of an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.

I want to retile with a full backspash and was wondering how to go about this over the damaged portions. Do I simply retile over the exposed plaster areas? How do I go about tiling over the cracked plaster portions?

Thank you for your input and suggestions.

Kitchen backsplash?

We are molding our kitchen and I’m not sure about our backsplash.
Do I apply the tile stright to the sheetrock? or do I need to cut the sheetrock out and replace it with a "dura bored" material?

(Right now the backsplash is only painted sheetrock/ bare wall.)
