what are my legal rights in this situation and what should i do?

so, i hired a contractor to remodel the kitchen and bathroom at my condo down in florida, and everything has gone incredibly wrong. he has cut the main phone line coming in so i have no phone and no internet. he has a mess of wires (all spliced together with bare wire showing) taped under the kitchen cabinets with painter’s tape, not even electrical tape. i gave him ,000 up front to buy supplies (faucets, medicine cabinets, backsplashes in the kitchen, etc), yet he hasn’t purchased any of the supplies and now i am spending my whole vacation running around to every home depot, lowes, and plumbing store looking for these items. and also, in the contract, it clearly states that he will be done by the end of february 2010, it is now the middle of april 2010 and he is no where near being done, but is still wanting to me to keep giving him checks. i have given him ,000 so far, and have nothing to show for it because his work looks like crap.
my sister said we could take him to court…but i was just wondering if i really could. if so, what would i say in court? and what rights do i have that he has gone against that would warrant going to court? in this situation, what do you think i should do?

How much will a kitchen backsplash cost?

I’m planning on using penny round tiles (sold in 12" sheets at Home Depot) and figure that materials will cost about 100 bucks. Can anyone give me an idea of how much labor will be? I know that it’s hard to say exactly, I’m just trying to get a general idea. Thanks in advance. :)

Need to create a flat surface for my backsplash. Any ideas?

So I have this ugly laminate material for my current backsplash circa 1980. I have purchased 12"x12" glass mosaic tile to replace the ugly stuff. We knew that thinset would never adhere to the laminate, so we tore it off. But now the drywall is damaged and unlevel.(see photo)

I’m looking for an alternative to having to use drywall compound to make it level. I would like to go right over it with some sort of building material. Something thinner than cement board, which is 1/4" thick. I would be happy with something that comes 1/8" thick so the new backsplash doesn’t stick out too far next to the bare wall where the backsplash ends. (see diagram)

I’ve been through Home Depot and Menards several times looking for ideas but have come up with no solution. HELP!
BTW: Not open to removing the drywall and replacing with cement board. The hubby and I just spent today and yesterday repairing the drywall from where we found black mold last weekend behind the lower cabinets. In the process of removing the moldy drywall, we ended up cutting the vapor barrier by accident. An absolute bit*ch to fix! Cutting out the drywall for the backsplash is not an option!

Do we really need to install cement backing when installing MARBLE tile on PAINTED drywall?

We have drywall in our kitchen that was painted with a smooth semi-gloss paint a good 8 yrs ago. We’d like to install 3"x6" tumbled marble as a backsplash over the drywall. It’s about 1/4" thick so probably slightly heavier than say, the tiny square glass tiles that come on a 12"x12" netting. One person at the Home Depot said we could just sand and scrape up the drywall and then apply the thinset and install the marble. Another said we might want to use a cement backing. We aren’t really DIYers and would so we don’t want to create extra work with the cement backing if it isn’t needed. That said, we don’t want the drywall to start peeling and the marble tiles to start falling off after a short amount of time.

Please advise. Thank you!

installing small glass tile backsplash?

I know that the wall has to be clean and free of debris, does it also have to be smooth or will the mastik fill in any holes?
corgiesr: I am not near a Lowe’s and I have had some bad advice from Home Depot, thanks for answering.
