Need to create a flat surface for my backsplash. Any ideas?

So I have this ugly laminate material for my current backsplash circa 1980. I have purchased 12"x12" glass mosaic tile to replace the ugly stuff. We knew that thinset would never adhere to the laminate, so we tore it off. But now the drywall is damaged and unlevel.(see photo)

I’m looking for an alternative to having to use drywall compound to make it level. I would like to go right over it with some sort of building material. Something thinner than cement board, which is 1/4" thick. I would be happy with something that comes 1/8" thick so the new backsplash doesn’t stick out too far next to the bare wall where the backsplash ends. (see diagram)

I’ve been through Home Depot and Menards several times looking for ideas but have come up with no solution. HELP!
BTW: Not open to removing the drywall and replacing with cement board. The hubby and I just spent today and yesterday repairing the drywall from where we found black mold last weekend behind the lower cabinets. In the process of removing the moldy drywall, we ended up cutting the vapor barrier by accident. An absolute bit*ch to fix! Cutting out the drywall for the backsplash is not an option!

does glass mosaic tile come in bullnose cut?

Glass (mosaic tile) for kitchen counter?

Anyone have any experience with using glass mosaic tile as the kitchen counter material (not just as the backsplash)? This would be for a lightly used area of my kitchen counter by the sink – not the primary work area. Would love to hear any pros and cons. Thanks!

can I tile a kitchen backsplash on hardboard?

High-density fiberboard is the only material thin and flat enough to use as a level surface for my new backsplash. The drywall was ruined slightly when we ripped the old laminate crap off the wall. Can I do glass mosaic tile over hardboard if I glue & screw the hardboard to the drywall? I’m using a modified thinset for the tile, so hopefully it will have good adhesion since hardboard is porous.

Just curious if this is a bad idea or not. There’s are no specialty tile guys to ask in my little town.

how do i install 1" glass mosaic tile into the border of my 4 x 4 porcelain tile kitchen backsplash?

We are installing a 4×4 porcelain tile backsplash in our kitchen. We want to add a 1×1 border trim of glass mosaic tile to add some interest. We aren’t sure how to do that considering the porcelain is about double the thickness of the mosaic tile. We were concerned with just trying to build out the mastic to the right thickness for fear that we wouldn’t be successful. How is this typically handled? I’m sure people have added mosaic tiles in with regular ceramic tiles. How did they do it?
