Installing glass mosaic tile backsplash in kitchen…?

The wall is painted with a slight texture to it–not completely flat. Will this cause major problems or will the thinset be able to even things out enough? I am hoping not to have to sand down the whole wall… Also, we have lots of outlets in the wall, and one of them is 2/3 on and 1/3 off the area we plan to tile–I see that most videos show removing the faceplates and tiling up to the hole and then replacing the plate, but if we do that on this particular (3 switch) plate, the plate will be a centimeter off the wall on the righthand end with nothing behind it. Any suggestions? This will be my first tiling project…hoping the challenges presented by widowsills and outlets won’t be insurmountable…
I think we’ll just tile around that one outlet and under the rest, won’t be perfect but it will work… Some of the tiles are see through, so we had planned on smoothing the thinset, which is what most of the information I have read said to do–the only concusing statement was about the grooves making up fr the texured plaster–since I’m smoothing the grooves out after I apply the thinset (again, there seem to be discrepancies in whether it is ok to use mastic or not–we just got thinset), will the texture then be a problem?
I did see one video that showed how to cut behind the windowsill–nifty, will have to see if we can borrow a tool for that.
One other question on which I have found discrepancies–how do you feel about corners? Run one line of tile all the way into the corner and start the next overlapping it (with a spacer, of course), or have the 2 sheets come together on the edges and have a wedge of thinset filling the tiny corner behind them?

Kitchen backsplash question?

Remodeling the kitchen and just wondering if for a backsplash you could put up tile just behind the stove and paint the rest of the space between the counter and the cabinets. I was thinking this tile:

http://www.homedepot.com/Kitchen-Backsplashes/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbcsz/R-203220877/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051&superSkuId=203286410

With the rest of the space painted a red(ish) color and then the rest of the kitchen tan, with a brushed technique that makes it look like it has a texture.
Also if i just put up the tile behind the stove will it look to monotnous with just one pattern tile?
Thank you in advance:-)
